Wordcount Bribery
October 18, 2007
AKA: A good use for gift cards, Y/N?
10k: How Can We Be Silent, BarlowGirl
20k: Hourglass, Kate Rusby
30k: Girl Genius, Vol. 1
40k: Whatever the heck I want, because it’s 40k
50k: NaNo T-shirt
I figure that’s pretty good intervals. Last year I had them clustered at the beginning because I had no idea whether I was going to finish or not–but now that I know I can theoretically do it, I’m spreading out the incentives over the whole 50k.
Working on roughly what era to set the story in. Think I’m going to go for a slightly different geographical setting, just for interest.
Busy
October 18, 2007
Have been very busy lately, but I think I’ll be prepared in time for NaNo. If I can even manage it this year with my schedule, that is, but if I have to drop out, that’s okay. (I can still say that I’ve won once, anyway.) I’ve been doing some outlining for the various ideas that I have bouncing around in my head, and a couple of them are starting to solidify, so that’s good news.
Now to come up with some wordcount bribes for myself to get me to 50,000…
Day Eleven Report
November 12, 2006
Went out today and bought myself Shannon Hale’s The Goose Girl for hitting 10k. I was intending to buy Kino no Tabi instead, but I couldn’t find it. In any case, it looks like it’s going to be a really good book. Hale’s really a great writer.
Thought I wasn’t going to make wordcount today, but still managed, despite spending three hours at the most boring musical of all time. Today’s writing was one scene in total, between Anabelle and the token quiet, insecure character, Maureen, who is about of the same social class that Anabelle once was, and who is the black sheep of her family in having no magical talent. She and Anabelle work together on a magical lab. Like chemistry lab. Only with magic. Yes, I’m entirely serious. (Hey, “write what you know,” right?)
Current count: 18418.
Day Eight Report
November 8, 2006
First day of week two, and still not hitting the wall yet! Managed to hit wordcount today, despite being ULTIMATE BUSY.
Speaking of wordcount, I have some wordcount bribery yet to purchase for myself. I had something that I was definitely going to buy at 10k that I haven’t gotten yet–the first Tokyopop translated volume of the Kino no Tabi light novel. Well, maybe on Saturday.
Still have trouble referring to my magic system without it sounding stupid. How does one teach magic in a classroom setting without sounding really stupid?
Hmm. Well, a problem for another day.
Day Five Report, Part II
November 5, 2006
Six o’ clock and I’m already ahead on wordcount! 8454, boo-yah. This is a-ma-zing. Maybe I can write some tonight and then manage to go really far tomorrow. If I can get to 11000 tomorrow, that would be awesome. (Leeway is good. I like leeway.)
I’m surprised–I’ve been turning out decent-sized chapters, which doesn’t happen a lot. I generally struggle to get them more than 1200 words, but I’m writing 2500+ per chapter consistently.
Also, I didn’t post a snippet yesterday, I think, so here’s a really big one! I like this part, I think Anabelle’s character shines through here. I often have trouble writing her because she’s so different from me, but I think I got her here.
